Lister Petter came into existence in 1986 when the two businesses of R A Lister and Petters were combined by their then owner Hawker Siddeley. R A Lister had been founded in 1867 by 22-year-old Robert Lister to produce engines to power farm machinery after falling out with his father.
The R.A. Lister works have produced a huge range of different products throughout its lifetime. After formation in 1867, the company started out making agricultural implements including chaff cutters, corn crushers, oat cleaners, land rollers, horse gears, chain harrows and stone grinding mills.
Lister engines were traditionally painted a mid-range shade of Brunswick Green, which continues to be used today by Lister Petter. The CS is a slow-running (600 rpm) reliable engine, suitable for driving electric generators or irrigation pumps.
