In addition to education, training and one or more years of supervised work experience are required to become a radiation safety officer. Suitable training programs feature a minimum of 200 classroom and laboratory hours covering topics such as radiation physics, dosimetry and radioactivity instrumentation and measurement.

The duties of this job vary by employer, but safety officers typically have responsibilities pertaining to policy development, safety inspections, safety training and compliance with the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration, commonly known as OSHA.
