It is chemically inert, but radioactive. Uses. Radon decays into radioactive polonium and alpha particles. This emitted radiation made radon useful in cancer therapy. Radon was used in some hospitals to treat tumours by sealing the gas in minute tubes, and implanting these into the tumour, treating the disease in situ.

The background image reflects the fact that detectable amounts of radon can build up in houses. Radon is a colourless and odourless gas. It is chemically inert, but radioactive. Radon decays into radioactive polonium and alpha particles.
Facilities testing for radon must submit their radon measurements to the Department of Health, Radon Program on one of the forms below. The appropriate form used depends on the type of building being tested. *Note: This page contains materials in the Portable Document Format (PDF).
This ANSI/AARST standard is for measuring radon levels in multifamily housing. Radon Mitigation Standards for Multifamily Buildings (RMS-MF 2018) This new American National Standard addresses the complexities of properly mitigating multifamily dwelling over four units that require specialized techniques and quality assurance.
This standard includes procedures for the collection and transport of water samples, as well as protocols for the quantitative transfer of the sample to a measurement device to determine radon concentrations in water.
Fast Facts: Radon. Radon is a colorless, odorless, and flavorless gas at ordinary temperature and pressure. Radon is radioactive and decays into other radioactive and toxic elements. Radon occurs in nature as the decay product of uranium, radium, thorium, and other radioactive elements.
Radon is radioactive, meaning that it can give off harmful rays. Some people have high levels of radon in their houses, and this can be very dangerous. A lot of radon can get stuck in the basement of old houses, and so people end up breathing it in. It gets stuck in the lungs and has been known to cause cancer.
Radon Facts. Thus, radon is considered a significant contaminant to indoor air quality. There is a clear link between breathing high concentrations of radon and incidence of lung cancer. After smoking, radon is the 2nd most frequent cause of lung cancer with over 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the US alone.
