The ruins of Coventry Cathedral (dedicated to Saint Michael), following the Coventry Blitz, a series of bombing RAIDs that took place on the English city of Coventry. The city was bombed many times during the Second World War by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe).
The Charred Cross was created after the cathedral was bombed during the Coventry Blitz of the Second World War. The cathedral stonemason, Jock Forbes, saw two wooden beams lying in the shape of a cross and tied them together.
Coventry is also the most central city in England, being only 12 miles (18 km) southwest of the country's geographical centre in Leicestershire. Coventry Cathedral was built after most of the 14th-century cathedral church of Saint Michael was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in the Coventry Blitz of 14 November 1940.
