That motor was the Raider 50, a two-stroke, multifuel, submersible outboard built exclusively for the U.S. military. Strictly speaking, these motors are government issue, but Woodruff said he’s at HSBO because he has permission to shop this product to governments on “friendly terms with the U.S.”
Special Forces use the motors to navigate froth-filled surf when landing on the beach, sometimes at night, which often leads to rolled boats and soaked outboards. Raider Outboards can take the abuse because they’re over-engineered and beefed up, but at their core they are basic two-stroke engines.
Raider is developing electric outboards for minefield detection. Water in the fuel, for example, is the arch-enemy of outboard engines deployed around the globe, so Chris came up with the idea of making the carburetor bowl out of clear plastic.
They took the name Raider from an elite unit of the Marine Corps that used rubber boats to make beach landings during World War II. They were called the Marine Raiders, and many consider them the precursor of the Navy SEALS. In 2013, Raider delivered six motors to the Guardian Angels for testing.
The Raider series of outboards are dedicated to the initial WW II Marine Raiders. The Raiders were formed by elite units established by the United States Marine Corps during World War II to conduct amphibious light infantry warfare, landing in rubber boats and operating behind enemy lines.
