Ensure the resident’s care plan provide an explanation of how the use of a bed rail is intended to treat the specific resident’s condition. Ensure the resident’s care plan identify and address any underlying problems causing the medical symptom/indication for use.
Load Requirements Handrails and Guards must be able to withstand a Uniform Load of 50 lbs/ft or a Concentrated Load of 200 lbs placed at the top of the handrail or guard. Infill areas must be able to withstand a load of 50 lbs/sq.ft. See information below regarding the unique requirements of glass railing systems.
Handrail and Handrail Systems The minimum clearance between handrails and other objects is 2.25 inches. Handrails have the shape and dimension necessary to grasp firmly. Ends of handrail and systems do not present any projection hazards.
Potential risks of bed rails may include: Strangling, suffocating, bodily injury or death when patients or part of their body are caught between rails or between the bed rails and mattress. More serious injuries from falls when patients climb over rails.

The MHRA continues to receive reports of incidents relating to bed rails and associated equipment. These incidents are concerning as some have led to patient harm or death, primarily from entrapment.
Bed rails should meet recognised product standards that include acceptable gaps and dimensions when fitted to the bed (See Legislation and Standards). Figure 3 - Example of a community-style bed with full-length integrated bed rails.
