General Functioning Principles. The basic principle behind ram pumps is to use a large amount of water falling a short distance to pump a small amount of water to a higher elevation. Typically, only 2% to 20% of the water flowing through a ram pump system will actually be delivered to the storage tank or trough.
This flow is produced by placing the hydraulic ram some distance below a water source and running the drive pipe from the water source to the pump. The hydraulic ram employs two check valves, which are the only moving parts in the pump. Step-by-step illustrations are provided in figures 2-6 explaining how a hydraulic ram pump operates.
