Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the purpose of Roman shades?

As with other types of window treatments, such as curtains, blinds, and cellular shades, Roman shades serve different purposes, depending on the type. Standard white light shades, often referred to as light-filtering, provide privacy while still allowing plenty of light into a space.

  • Should Roman shades be mounted inside or outside the window frames?

One of the big questions when specifying Roman shades for a room is whether to mount them inside or outside the window frames. Sometimes there is simply not enough space within a window frame to hold a shade, which makes the decision easy. Otherwise, “It all depends on the architecture,” says Couturier.

  • Do Roman blinds need to be lined?

Not all shades need to be lined. For simple sheer Roman shades, many designers use the selected face fabric by itself for a visually light appearance. But in other situations, using a lining—a secondary fabric sewn to the back of the face material—can give blinds a more finished, luxurious look.

  • How much space do you need for a roman shade?

In general, it is recommended to add about 1½ inches on either side of the window for a total of an additional 3 inches. This will help prevent too much light from coming into the room from around the sides of the Roman shade. Next, measure the length of the window and any additional space that will need to be covered by the shade.
