RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a method to communicate information from one point to another point by the use of electromagnetic waves (that is, radio waves). It has unique characteristics that make it attractive for use in industrial systems.
The tag information is stored in a non-volatile memory. The RFID tag includes either fixed or programmable logic for processing the transmission and sensor data, respectively. RFID tags can be either passive, active or battery-assisted passive. An active tag has an on-board battery and periodically transmits its ID signal.
In commercial aviation, RFID is used to support maintenance on commercial aircraft. RFID tags are used to identify baggage and cargo at several airports and airlines. Some countries are using RFID for vehicle registration and enforcement. RFID can help detect and retrieve stolen cars.
The probably first paper related to RFID technology was the landmark paper by Harry Stockman, "Communication by Means of Reflected Power" in October 1948. The first patent on RFID was issued in 1973 for a passive radio transponder with memory [US. Patent 3,713,148].
