S3, though, would live on with an entirely unoriginal new name (S3 Graphics) and a new purpose: integrated chipsets. At the start of the millennium, CPUs from AMD and Intel -- such as the Athlon XP and Pentium III -- didn't have a graphics processor built into them.
In 22 months, the company went into public. In 1989, Banatao launched his third start-up company, S3 Graphics, with Yara in Santa Clara, California. S3 focused on enhancing the graphic capabilities in personal computers by using a graphic accelerator chip.
S3 produces graphics cards primarily for PCs. While the earlier products such as the TRIO range were 2D only, later 3D functionality was added with the ViRGE and then Savage cards. More recently S3 chipsets have been sold as integrated VIA northbridge parts.
Savage 3D (1998), 4 (1999), 2000 (2000) - S3's first recognizably modern 3D hardware implementation. Poor yields meant actual clock speeds were 30% below expectations, and buggy drivers caused further problems. S3 Texture Compression went on to become an industry standard, and the Savage3D's DVD acceleration was market leading at introduction.
S3, though, would live on with an entirely unoriginal new name (S3 Graphics) and a new purpose: integrated chipsets. At the start of the millennium, CPUs from AMD and Intel -- such as the Athlon XP and Pentium III -- didn't have a graphics processor built into them.
Just as AMD and Nvidia do today, S3 used other companies to manufacture and distribute the chips, which would then be purchased by add-in board vendors for their own products.
By the end of the year, S3 launched the ViRGE ('Virtual Reality Graphics Engine') chip; essentially an improved Trio with some 3D capability shoehorned into it (marketed as the S3d Engine ). Add-in cards using the processor weren't readily available until early 1996, and these first offerings were met with universal ambivalence.
