Sant’Andrea’s huge central space and buttressing side chapels strongly resemble the layout of the ancient Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine in the Roman forum (below). The basilica plan is perfectly suited to large churches since it could accommodate massive crowds.

Oct 25, 2004 . Indeed, at times the biographies of the Blessed read more like architectural manuals than the life of a saint. This is because the life of the little brother was so intimately connected with the building of this shrine that one cannot be discussed without the other. To put it simply, what started out as a fifteen-by eighteen foot chapel in 1904 ...

But unlike earlier basilica-plan churches, Sant’Andrea's plan seems to return more strictly to the ancient forms. It’s even possible that Sant’Andrea’s unusual plan and all’antica (“after the antique”) façade impacted the new St. Peter’s and the Church of the Gesù in Rome.
The façade, built abutting a pre-existing bell tower (1414), is based on the scheme of the ancient Arch of Trajan at Ancona. It is largely a brick structure with hardened stucco used for the surface.
Comment on Jeff Kelman's post “We read, "...Sant’Andrea is built of bricks, thoug...” Posted 6 years ago. Direct link to Asilly2's post “The stucco used in Florence probably consisted of ...” The stucco used in Florence probably consisted of sand, lime, and water, and was applied in three coats.
The nave is roofed by a barrel vault, one of the first times such a form was used in such a monumental scale since antiquity, and probably modeled on the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome.
St. Andrew is the patron saint of fishermen and singers. He is also the patron saint to several countries and cities including: Scotland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Patras and his feast day is celebrated on November 30.
The Saints detailed in the section entitled Roman Catholic Saints A-G include those used by many Catholics in America in the 1900's and information about their lives are taken from the Lives of the Saints by Alban Butler which was taken from the Benziger Brothers edition of the book published in 1894.
St. Andrew. With Saints Peter, James, and John, Andrew asked Jesus on the Mount of Olives for signs of the earth’s end, which inspired the eschatological discourse in Mark 13. In The Gospel According to John, Andrew is the first Apostle named, and he was a disciple of St. John the Baptist before Jesus’ call.
