The American manuals flat-out referred to Samus as a "he", but it is unknown if this was an attempt to keep Samus' gender a secret or simply a mistranslation. Only by beating the game in under an hour could the player gain access to a secret ending where Samus would remove her Power Suit and reveal herself as a woman.

One interesting thing is how the manual refers to Samus with male pronouns, considering Samus (spoiler) is a woman. Metroid was originally produced in Japan, and since the Japanese language doesn't use gender specific pronouns, the ambiguity was easy to maintain--the average gamer would just assume Samus was male. Manual: Samus's energy is refilled by 99 units if the cursor is moved to RESERVE TANK and press the A button. Beam: This shows which beams Samus is using. You can combine some beams for a powerful effect, but SPAZER and PLASMA beams cannot be used simultaneously. Suit: This shows which suits Samus is wearing.

I'm sure many of us here are aware of Samus' height being listed as 6'3" in a playing manual for Super Metroid. Reference. While this picture gives the implication that Samus is 6'3" outside her suit, it does not provide insight in regards to her suit's height.

Samus, by order of the Galactic Federal Police, successfully and singlehandedly penetrated the space pirates' natural fortress on the planet Zebes. After a series of intense battles, Samus destroyed all the Metroids she encountered. Her destruction of the reactivated Mother Brain at the center of the fortress crushed the pirates' evil plans.
If you want to reset the game, press and hold A, B, Start, and Select at the same time. Samus's controls get more complex as she gains abilities and weaponry, but that will be covered in the items and walkthrough sections.
