The allure of southern USA has been calling me for years. I wanted to experience that famous Southern charm, the music, the moss-laden trees, the accent, the mountains, and all the colourful cities and quirks that make up the southern states. It’s a big area y’all, so coming up with a south US road trip itinerary was no mean feat.

First of all, it’s not easy to define ‘southern USA’ as although it can include everything south of the Mason-Dixie line and as far west as Louisiana and Arkansas, most definitions hone in on the central states, leaving out the states north of Tennessee and North Carolina, and also sometimes Florida.
For instance, you may see a lot of shake and shingle siding in New England, beaded vinyl in the South, and vertical siding profiles in the West and Midwest. Of course, no design is exclusive to a geography, and mixing of materials and profiles across the United States has become extremely popular.
I wanted to experience that famous Southern charm, the music, the moss-laden trees, the accent, the mountains, and all the colourful cities and quirks that make up the southern states. It’s a big area y’all, so coming up with a south US road trip itinerary was no mean feat.
The best way to get to know the South is by hitting the road! As a note, this loose itinerary is meant to serve as a guide and you can follow it in either direction!
Depending on your route, the coast-to-coast drive across America ranges in distance from approximately 2,500 to 3,500 miles. If you're prepared to clock eight-plus hours behind the wheel per day, the shortest route should takes four days and the longest six.
The Greatest American Road Trip started on January 1, 2016 and ended on December 31, 2016. During that time, we were on the road in a 4X4 SUV, with an Airstream trailer in tow, traveling to all 59 U.S. National Parks in 52 weeks-about one per week.
