The states in dark red are usually included in modern-day definitions of the South, while those in the color red are often included. The striped states are sometimes considered Southern. The culture of the Southern United States, or Southern culture, is a subculture of the United States.
The U.S. borders both the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans and is bordered by Canada and Mexico. It is the third-largest country in the world by area and has a varied topography. The eastern regions consist of hills and low mountains, while the central interior is a vast plain (called the Great Plains region).
Which Southern states did not secede from the Union? Despite their acceptance of slavery, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri did not join the Confederacy. Although divided in their loyalties, a combination of political maneuvering and Union military pressure kept these states from seceding.
