In recent years, we have increased our knowledge about their coastal habitat use through passive acoustic monitoring and the collection of new sightings. Scientists estimate the minimum historical population of Southern Residents numbered about 140 animals. Following a live-capture fishery in the 1960s, 71 animals remained in 1974.
In 2006, NOAA Fisheries designated inland waters of Washington State as critical habitat for the Southern Resident killer whale. We designated this habitat because it contains three features essential to the conservation of Southern Residents: Water quality to support growth and development.
