Tadao Ando was born on September 13, 1941 in Osaka, Japan. He did not care much for school, and at the age of 17, became a professional boxer. This lasted for a couple of years before he moved on to apprentice as a carpenter. The hands-on education he received while working as a carpenter proved invaluable.
