To get started, all you need for the lathe is a few pieces of HSS stock (please learn to grind your own), couple of centers, lathe dog, 3 and maybe 4 jaw chuck and drill chuck. For the mill, a vise, a few HSS end mills, chuck, collet or end mill holder. Add a dial indicator, 6" digital caliper and micrometer and you can make just about anything.
I have seen a Taig lathe adapted with a long bed for use in turning pool cues, and two lathes aligned end to end, their spindles driven in sync, for use as a glassblowing lathe. I’m toying with the idea of using a Taig headstock with index wheel as a light-duty index head that doesn’t require removing the vise.
The ER16 spindle allows tooling up to 3/8" to be utilized. Proudly made in the U.S.A.! Taig now offers a ball screw option on the CNC ready and CNC mills!
