These fish are known for their size, which makes keeping them in a home aquarium something that not everyone can do. The typical lifespan of a Sailfin Pleco is around 15 to 20 years when in captivity. It’s far more common for these fish to reach the upper end of their lifespan in the wild though.
Here are some care tips you can follow to keep your Common Pleco happy and healthy. Adult Common Plecos need a tank size of 75 to 80 gallons at the very minimum. However, to help your fish reach its full size and potential you’ll need at least 150 gallons! Larger is always better with the Common Pleco.
One needs to feed the Pleco once or twice a week depending upon the algae growth in the tank. If the algae growth is sufficient enough they can just feed it once a week.
Because plecos are hardy, peaceful fish, they are appropriate for a wide range of tank mates. Some of the fish from their same region of the world include: Angelfish are large, new-word cichlids from South America. They grow up to a foot tall, and like the common pleco, they require a large tank.
