Vehicles equipped with air bags, including air bags that are under recall, save lives and reduce injuries. The vast majority of TAKATA air bags will perform as expected.
In addition to original TAKATA manufacturing defects, which prompted the first inflator recalls in 2008 and 2009, the passage of time and exposure to hot and humid conditions makes these older inflators particularly vulnerable to ruptures, which can cause serious injury or death to vehicle occupants.
Under the agreement, Volkswagen will recall desiccated TAKATA PSAN air bag inflators in select Beetle, Beetle Convertible, and Passat vehicles. The recalls will occur in three risk-based phases, the first of which is scheduled for December 31, 2020.
In addition to original TAKATA manufacturing defects, which prompted the first inflator recalls in 2008 and 2009, the passage of time and exposure to hot and humid conditions makes these older inflators particularly vulnerable to ruptures, which can cause serious injury or death to vehicle occupants.
Among other things, in the TAKATA air bag recalls, NHTSA has: Investigated TAKATA’s PSAN air bag inflators and successfully pressured TAKATA to recall the tens of millions of defective air bag inflators it sold.
Every recall is serious because it means there is a safety problem with your vehicle, so contact your dealer as soon as possible to get the recall repair FOR FREE. If a dealer refuses to repair your vehicle as described in the recall letter, you should notify the manufacturer immediately.
