Tape and Reel Packaging Standards Embossed Tape and Reel is used to facilitate automatic pick and place equipment feed requirements. The tape is used as the shipping container for various products and requires a minimum of handling.
The units are sealed in the carrier tape with a cover tape, usually by heat or pressure. The carrier tape is wound around a reel for convenient handling and transport. The reel is enclosed in a reel box before it is finally shipped to the customer.
The physical and electrical properties of the tape and reel materials used are important to prevent loading/unloading problems and ESD failures. For instance, the materials used in the carrier tape, cover tape, and even reels should be antistatic, if not static dissipative.
