Sep 01, 2014 . The TDM interface is by far the most common mechanism used to transfer multiple channels of audio data between devices within a system as shown in Figure 1. The TDM interface has not been standardized and there can be variants between the TDM formats. Fortunately the TDM ports in DSP devices are programmable and will support the multitude of options.

PDM pulse-density modulation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-density_modulationwhich simplifies the audio output hardware on the TX side but rely on the decimation filter (downsampling) on the RX side. I2S has limit of two channels in protocol while TDM can support multiple channel (usu. up to 16).

TDM stands for Time Division Multiplexing, the time-interlaced transmission of several digital audio signals through a single data bus. This bus system is physically isolated from the computer system bus, and runs between the individual TDM-capable PCI boards. 256 (MIX) or 512 (with HD/HD Accel) digital audio channels, each with 24 bit resolution, can be transmitted on the TDM bus.

This is theoretically using ALSA, but the PulseAudio device instead of specifying your own. Sticking with this option should guarantee that the correct audio device is used, but it has one problem: Sound flickers and lags.

Using the FDM system a large amount of data can be transmitted than TDM. It is a great advantage of FDM over TDM. Using the FDM system multimedia data can be transferred with very high efficiency and low noise and distortion. FDM system has high reliability.
FDM is used in stereo Frequency Modulation or FM transmission systems. FDM is also used in Amplitude Modulation or AM radio transmission system. Frequency Division Multiplexing or FDM system is used for multimedia data such as video, audio, image transmission.
The complexities involving signal routing and providing a sufficient number of input/output ports on digital-signal-processors and converter can be a daunting task. As a result, the industry has adopted a Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) interface that allows multiple channels of data to be transmitted on a single data line.
