The original AR 4 speakers came out in 1964 with an unfinished birch frame and tan cloth front. After the speaker became a hit, Acoustic Research opted to produce the AR 4x speakers with a polished dark walnut veneer and white cloth grill. Since that time, the AR 4 series of speakers have graced the living rooms and home theaters as an accent.
The original AR 4 speakers came out in 1964 with an unfinished birch frame and tan cloth front. After the speaker became a hit, Acoustic Research opted to produce the AR 4x speakers with a polished dark walnut veneer and white cloth grill.
The tweeters were switched to the 1 1/4″ tweeters used in the AR-6 and AR-7. This review targets the AR-4x and AR-4xa, but the differences to the older AR-4 are minor. The 4x and 4xa are 2-way acoustic suspension speakers in beautiful walnut veneer with the typical white Acoustic Research cloth grills.
The 4x is still a nice speaker. I will be interested in your speaker's details as they fall in a range where we have no data. We know that serial number 175,000 still had a 1,400 Hz crossover, and that by 225,000 the crossover had been changed to 1,200 Hz. The new crossover used the larger (AR-#5 coil).
