Mar 22, 2019 . Tom founded Ultrahaptics half-way through his PhD and, as Ultrahaptics gained support and investment, he left his PhD to fully dedicate his time to helping the company grow. Ultrahaptics directs ultrasound where the hands are in relation to the invisible object, and that space in between the two is sculpt into a visible and touchable object (a full sphere instead of just outlines). Ultrahaptics: Multi-point mid-air haptic feedback for touch surfaces. We introduce Ultrahaptics, a system designed to provide multi-point haptic feedback above an interactive surface. Ultrahaptics employs focused ultrasound to project discrete points of haptic feedback through the display and directly on to users' unadorned hands.
Haptic devices may incorporate tactile sensors that measure forces exerted by the user on the interface. The word haptic, from the Greek: ἁπτικός ( haptikos ), means "pertaining to the sense of touch ". Simple haptic devices are common in the form of game controllers, joysticks, and steering wheels .

To add mid-air haptics, you’ll need either a STRATOS Explore or STRATOS Inspire haptic module. Both come with a Leap Motion Controller included, so this single unit is all you need for both hand tracking and haptics. They also require the Ultraleap Haptics SDK to run.
