How you use umbrellas depends on the type you’re using. With shoot-through umbrellas, the light shines through the umbrellas, which means the light needs to be pointing at your subject.
Shoot-through umbrellas, as the name suggests, are made of white, translucent material which allows you to shoot the light directly through them. This diffuses the light and creates the soft light that makes them so popular. Reflective umbrellas have a black outer material and either a white, silver or gold interior lining.
If you're using a shoot-through umbrella, the result you'll get is somewhat comparable to that of a small softbox. Both modifiers diffuse the light and result in smooth, soft shadows. A reflective umbrella on the other hand, will produce a slightly more sparkly light than a softbox.
In any photography studio — amateur and professional alike — you’ll probably find at least one or two umbrellas. These lightweight and affordable modifiers can be used to achieve a number of different results, which is part of the reason they’re so widely used.
The umbrella can either face the subject directly or be placed in a way that it reflects off another object. For example, in a studio, you could use the umbrella to reflect light off a white wall and make the light even softer. With a reflective umbrella, place the strobe or flash looking away from the subject.
Next, you can either attach your light source first or put the umbrella on first. I prefer attaching the umbrella first. Go ahead and slide the umbrella handle into the umbrella holder hole. It should have a knob at the side to tighten it in place. Then go ahead and place the light. Pay attention to how close you place the light to the umbrella.
Photography umbrellas are a type of lighting modifier. Umbrellas fall under the category of diffusion. All diffusers create a larger light source, spreading the light out over a larger area and creating a softer light.
