UNIPOL Process technology for making polyethylene is announced. Union Carbide sells portion of its metals business. A major advance expanding the scope of the UNIPOL Process technology to include polypropylene is announced. GAF Corporation announces bid to takeover Union Carbide Corporation.
Union Carbide was established in 1917 as Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation. The ethylene producer and purchaser filed its first patent to prepare the chemical in 1919. In 1920, the company established Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corporation. Shortly after, the company opened the first commercial ethylene plant in Clendenin, West Virginia.
Around midnight on 3 December 1984, methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas was accidentally released from the plant, exposing more than 500,000 people to MIC and other chemicals. The government of Madhya Pradesh confirmed a total of 16,000 deaths related to the gas release.
