The whistle, when blown, gives off steam - faintly in spring, summer and autumn/fall, but much more in winter. Sparks fly from the wheel tyres when wheelslip (wheelspin) or wheelskid occurs.

Steam. During World War II Union Pacific operated some of the most modern and powerful steam locomotives ever built. Among them were the famous "Big Boys," the largest steam locomotives in the world. Working with them were the "800-class" high-speed passenger locomotives, as well as hundreds of older class steam engines.

In 1936, the first group of locomotives with the 4-6-6-4 wheel arrangement was delivered to the Union Pacific Railroad. They were an imme- diate success and their roster grew to number 105 locomotives on the Union Pacific alone. This new wheel arrangement was given the name “CHAL- LENGER”.
1HISTORY OF THE UNION PACIFIC FEF-CLASS 4-8-4 Of all the thousands upon thousands of mainline steam locomotives that worked for Class I railroads, only one is still on the active roster of its original owner, having never been retired.
All FEF classes were considered by the Union Pacific to be capable of producing between 4,000 and 5,000 drawbar horsepower. The FEF-3 class represented the epitome of dual-service steam locomotive development; funds and research were being concentrated into the development of diesel-electric locomotives.
Built in December 1944 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, No. 844 is one of just four surviving FEF locomotives and the only one in operating condition.
No. 844 in excursion service since 1960; renumbered to 8444 from 1962 to 1989. The first twenty locomotives, numbered 800–819, were delivered by ALCO in 1937. The "800"s as a whole followed – like Northumbrian 108 years earlier – the simplest possible arrangement of only having two outside cylinders.
The second batch of fifteen was delivered in 1939. These had several improvements, including larger cylinders, better tractive effort, taller driving wheels, and smoke deflectors on the sides of the smokebox.
