Frequently Asked Questions

  • When was the context in archaeology manual published?

A 'context' is simply a unit of record, and is usually defined stratigraphically. The original manual on which this is based was published in 1980 by the Museum of London's former Department of Urban Archaeology (DUA). A revised and much expanded version of this manual was produced in 1990, accompanied by revised recording sheets.

  • What's the best tool to use on an archaeological site?

Bulk Scraper: The secret weapon. This tool is how you get the straightest bulk walls on site. Archaeological sites are broken down into grid units and on our site each grid is a 5 X 5 meter square. Bulk walls for as you move down into the soil sort of like a small shaft.

  • What do you use a trowel for in archaeology?

A trowel to an archaeologist is like a scalpel to a surgeon. Since arriving on site not a day has gone by that I have not required my trowel. It can be used for a variety of things on site ranging from scraping a bulk to examining soil changes on a surface, or simply collecting dirt into a dustpan.

  • Do you need specialist advice for archaeological work?

Nevertheless, the detail with which any particular type of' feature or method can be discussed is limited, and in some circumstances it is important to seek specialist advice. MoLAS employs specialists in finds, timber recording, environmental archaeology, archaeological photography and surveying.
