Frequently Asked Questions

  • What kind of life does an urban fox have?

Urban foxes are mostly active at night and early morning but are increasingly becoming more active throughout the day. Urban foxes are natural scavengers and their cunning nature makes them extremely adaptable to city life often living off food scavenged out of bins and rubbish bags.

  • Are there any urban foxes protected in Ireland?

Urban foxes are not currently protected in Ireland and may be controlled in order to prevent health and safety hazards. Wildlife Management Services have been providing Urban fox control in the greater Dublin region for the last 10 years and are experts in the field. Please also view our page on Urban fox proofing for further information.

  • How does a fox control its own population?

No. Most Urban fox populations regulate their own numbers, by limiting the number of cubs they produce each year. This they do remarkably successfully, and the cubs that survive to adulthood almost exactly replace the number of adult foxes that die each year.

  • Can a local government manage a flying fox?

Local governments also have the option to develop a flying-fox management plan to cover their entire local government area. If the plan is endorsed by the department, local governments will be able to be granted a three-year approval to manage flying-fox roosts outside of Urban areas.
