Posi-traction rear axles were always standard on Trans Am models. Power steering, disc brakes, rear spoilers, and on 1970-81 models either a shaker or Turbo-style hood was standard. 1970-78 models either had a 400 or 455 V8 as standard equipment. 1970-81 models all had 15" wheels as standard equipment. (L78 and W72) units built in 1978.
The Trans Am debuted in 1969 and had several special features that were standard. 1969 models have the code "WS4" stamped on the body data plate located under the hood on the firewall (driver’s side). Posi-traction rear axles were always standard on Trans Am models.
Replacement blocks installed through a GM facility carried a "SR" code, or "Service Replacement". Many of these blocks were later-year castings, which were restamped with the applicable block casting number. These blocks will not have V.I.N. codes or motor unit numbers.
Available as an option on both Trans Ams and Firebird Formulas for the latter half of 1973 and again for 1974, the SD-455 almost didn't see the light of day as a management change at Pontiac ushered in new bosses who saw little worth in what was then the fading performance-car business.

The numbers--and we do love talking numbers when talking about muscle cars--break down as follows: Of 43 Firebird Formula SD-455s made in 1973, just 10 had four-speeds. Of 252 Trans Am SD-455s in '73, only 72 had the manual transmission.
But since leaded gas was out and stricter emissions laws were in, the SD-455 made do with 8.25:1 compression and .470-inch lift, versus the RA IV's 10.5:1 compression and .520 lift. All of the hardware was bagged and labeled, then sent out to be reconditioned with the appropriate finish.
