The biggest difference with the WS-500 over other systems I have used is the data it utilizes to make charging decisions – battery voltage, battery temperature, alternator temperature and current. Most regulators only the first few, and not the current flowing to/from your battery bank.
The cooperative effort between Wakespeed and Slovenian BMS manufacturer REC enables Wakespeed's WS500 alternator to share connectivity with the REC BMS via a CANbus interface. Through this CANbus connection, the BMS can actively control alternator-based charging to ensure safe and optimal charging of LiFeP04 battery banks.
The ports use J1939 CAN so there are opportunities to connect and control using a BMS or other external system. Wakespeed have a lot of really cool plans and already existing installs that leverage this open standard. This is the regulator side of the cable bundle which uses a beautiful connector.

Wakespeed's WS500 regulator firmware revision is now available on the Technical Page of this website. This revision offers multiple advancements and new features that are critical to optimal system performance. We advise all WS500 users to install the new firmware.
The advanced WS500 alternator regulator, with its unique ability to regulate based on voltage, current, and alternator temperature, is by far the most capable charging source for both traditional lead acid and new generation LiFePo4 lithium ion batteries. All Wakespeed regulators are made in the USA.
In newer technology environments, Wakespeed’s WS500 provides unparalleled performance with a broad range of Lithium Ion and other high density energy storage systems. And, as the technology evolves, the WS500 advances as well. Unlike other products currently available, the WS500 is completely software upgradable.
