All new tenders shall comply with the requirements of NFPA 1901 including the chapters on general requirements; chassis and vehicle components; low-voltage electrical systems and warning devices; driving and crew areas; body, compartments and equipment mounting; and mobile Water supply fire apparatus.
For relatively simple fires, a nurse tender operation may be appropriate. In this evolution the tender simply continuously supplies an engine operating at the scene and prevents it from running out of Water. Nurse tender operations are easy to establish but they have a significant weakness.
The primary objective of the Guide is to provide field users in wildland firefighting agencies with a basic information document on Water handling equipment. Within the wildland fire community, every imaginable type of Water handling equipment is in use.
This Interagency Water Handling Equipment Guide has been developed and published by the NWCG Fire Equipment Working Team (FEWT).
