Appendix C provides information to be used when sizing and selecting pumps for wells on AED projects. Appendix D includes the actual textbook pages for selected references. Appendix E contains the Water Well Summary Sheet and instructions. The primary goal is to find a suitable Water supply at the shallowest depth.
They are lined (cased) with stones, brick, tile, or other material to prevent collapse. Dug wells have a large diameter, are shallow (approximately 10 to 30 feet deep) and are not cased continuously. Driven wells are constructed by driving pipe into the ground.
Current regulations call for wells to be drilled. After drilling, the well contractor will put a Watertight casing of either plastic (PVC) or steel pipe in the bore hole. Typically, the casing extends 1 foot or more above the surrounding land, preventing surface Water from entering the well.
DRIVEN WELLS Driven wells are still common today. They are built by driving a small-diameter pipe into soft earth, such as sand or gravel. A screen is usually attached to the bottom of the pipe to filter out sand and other particles.
How to Install a Shallow Well Pump. To begin to install a shallow well pump, shut off the power supply to the pump and drain the existing system of all pressure. Then drain all liquids from the system and secure the discharge line. An unsecured line could whip and cause severe injury or property damage.
Pit-Style, Shallow Wells. For a pit-style well, dig a sizable pit in the ground in the area of a natural spring or seep. The pit then will naturally fill with Water so you can extract it. Of course, taking Water from an open pit is neither sanitary nor recommended, so additional steps need to be taken.
