Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does waves work with Abbey Road Studio 3?

The Waves Nx application opens or closes automatically when you open or close the Abbey Road Studio 3 plug-in, so you can instantiate the plug-in in the usual way and everything will be taken care of for you. The three plug-in components support the different input channel formats: stereo, 5.1 surround and 7.1 surround.

  • How does waves Abbey Road reverb plate work?

The Waves Abbey Road Reverb Plates plug-in GUI provides a pictorial representation of a plate, with some very retro-looking controls arrayed below it. When active, ‘vibrations’ can be seen emanating from the driver and moving over the plate, but clicking it converts these to a waveform display.

  • What's the difference between waves Abbey Road and EMT 140?

The Abbey Road Plates are emulations of the famous four EMT 140 plates at Abbey Rd, which were modded to fit the Abbey Road Standards, creating their individual characteristics. And they all do sound quite unique. So here is a comparison shootout showing these differences, and our thoughts on The UAD EMT 140 and the Waves Abbey Road Plates.

  • What kind of plugin did Abbey Road use?

The RS56 was used in Abbey Road Studios from 1951-1970 on recordings prior to disc-cutting. Peter Cobbin, senior engineer at Abbey Road Studios, took a few minutes off work on the latest Harry Potter movie to speak with Waves about his career and the story behind The King's Microphones plugin.

  • Are there any plugins inspired by Abbey Road?

Definitely the most comprehensive collection of Abbey Road-Inspired plugins, I admire Waves for not settling on EQs and Compressors, and rather faithfully reproducing some of the stranger tools that the engineers at Abbey Road used, or even invented, including Reel ADT.

  • What makes Abbey Road Studios sound so distinctive?

It is not just Abbey Road’s beautiful acoustics that make its recordings sound so distinctive - our expert team of engineers has worked tirelessly to develop innovative techniques and equipment that are synonymous with the Studios.

  • What kind of signal path does Abbey Road use?

Abbey Road pioneered the STEED (Send, Tape, Echo, Echo, Delay) signal path, all meticulously modelled in Abbey Road Chambers. Impulse responses handle the reverb side of things, while speaker/mic models and a tape delay emulation complete the classic chain. For versatility, other rooms, speakers and mics can be swapped out, too.

  • What kind of instruments do Abbey Road use?

Our range of sampled instruments include drums and pianos, recorded by our engineering team in Abbey Road’s Studios One, Two and Three, while hardware emulations of vintage EMI outboard gear recreate the sounds of Abbey Road’s classic recording equipment from the ‘60s and ‘70s.
