This back up is perfect for people with big basements and live in areas with frequent power failure, or heavy water flow in the basement since the backup will turn on if there is too much in the basin for the main pump to handle.

Ideally you want a back up that can run for at least 4 hours so your power has a chance to come back on. Although the battery will only last for so long, it can go a long way towards preventing catastrophic flooding in your basement.
Test your sump pump regularly: pour a few gallons of water slowly into the sump basin and check if the float switch elevates and the sump pump turns on. The pump should eliminate the water from the basin and turn itself off. Check if water doesn’t flow back into the pit: that could be a sign of a broken check valve.
