The Standards & Procedures for Surveying and Mapping manual provides a standardized guide for consultant land surveyors in the performance of surveying and mapping projects for the Office of General Services.

The following Practice Guidelines (hereafter referred to as Guidelines) for Land Surveying in this State of New York have been created to facilitate increased uniformity and ensure that surveys are performed and documented in accordance with acceptable procedures.
The type of surveying or mapping required for a project will be outlined in the contract with each consultant. Within this manual are standards and procedures for most of the services that might be required. When specified, these standards and procedures are to be considered a part of the contract.
The State Board for Engineering and Land Surveying issued the first draft of its proposed Land Surveying Practice Guidelines in July 1997. Thereafter, the Board received extensive comments from the field. To the extent possible these Guidelines were revised to accomodate the concerns raised by various parties.
The following items are standard for all field surveys c onducted for the OGS unless specifically exempted by contractual specifications. When using GPS data collection methods OGS refers to the NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) Spatial Accuracy Standards as defined in the DOT Land Surveying Standards and Procedures Manual.
