Today, one Zenith model in particular is regarded as the most sought after antique radio on the planet. The Zenith Z-1000 Stratosphere was Zeniths top of the line and marketed as a rich man’s radio. It sold for $750, which was higher than the average price of a new car in the mid 1930s.
Pioneers in electronics technology for 95 years, Zenith inventors have made countless industry-leading developments, including the first wireless TV remote controls, the first portable and push-button radios, the first stereo audio systems for FM radio and television, and the first terrestrial broadcast system for HDTV using digital technology.
Afterward, the company shifted gears and devoted most of its attention to televisions. Here, too, Zenith became an innovator, releasing the first wireless remotes for TV in 1955 (the Flash-Matic) and 1956 (the Space Command). Collectors of Zenith radios can use model numbers to help identify a radio’s model year.
Technically speaking, Zenith still exists today as a division of LG, with offices in Lincolnshire, Illinois. But its old Chicago factories—and the thousands of vintage Zenith radios still in circulation—offer the only real reminders of glories long since past.
