ZENKER's diverticulum is a type of diverticulum that develops in the hypopharynx, typically between the cricopharyngeus (CP) muscle and the inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscle. It only involves the mucosa and submucosal layers and does not involve the muscular layer, hence making it a false diverticulum. It may also occur in other parts of the esophagus, such as between the oblique and ...

Background: The occurrence of the pharyngoesophageal, or ZENKER diverticulum is not frequent in the national scenario, and the technique of the diverticulectomy with cricomyotomy in medium and great dimension diverticula is still the most indicated. Because the resection of the diverticulum requires the suture of the pharynx, dehiscence can occur, thereafter delaying swallowing.

Oct 29, 2013 . • A ZENKER's diverticulum is a blind sac (pouch) that branches off the esophagus at the upper esophageal sphincter. • It is the most common type of esophageal diverticulum. Although its precise etiology is uncertain, it is thought that it is caused by increased intraluminal pressure caused by a dyscoordination of pharyngeal contraction and cricopharyngeal relaxation.

Treatment of ZENKER's diverticulum. ZD is actually a pseudodiverticulum since the ZENKER's pouch contains only esophageal mucosa and submucosa. ZD can cause dysphagia and the pooling of food within the diverticulum, which can cause frequent regurgitation and can lead to aspiration pneumonia.
It tends to occur in middle-aged and older adults, especially people in their 70s and 80s. ZENKER’s diverticulum is rare among people under 40. It affects men more often than women. It’s also referred to as pharyngoesophageal diverticulum, hypopharyngeal diverticulum, or pharyngeal pouch.
Treatment of ZENKER's diverticulum. Treatment for symptomatic ZD can be surgical or endoscopic. The surgical approach involves an external neck incision with CP myotomy (diverticulotomy), with or without pouch intervention (inversion, diverticulopexy or diverticulectomy). The endoscopic approach, using rigid or flexible endoscopes,...
